Have to agree about the quality of the prints being used but it's still great to have it back on the telly. In the current weeks Radio Times (16-22 November) there is a letter on page 159 from a viewer which is headed up "Magic That Lasts" and starts...." Shame on Radio Times for not highlighting the revival of Catweazle - I hope he doesn't put a spell on you !".....the short letter goes on to praise Geoffrey and the series as a whole, and is obviously from a fan. To accompany the letter they have printed a small circular photo of Geoffrey from the series with the caption "Wizard !"

I agree with the fan, there SHOULD have been more by way of announcing the repeating of what was such a much loved program. I also think that schools could easily do a study on it by asking the kids how would they react in that situation and what things would scare them and what might they think they were if they saw and heard these things for the first time.

I think it's likely a comment on the status of Talking Pictures TV as a small, independent channel, than it is about the importance of Catweazle.
As far as TPTV goes, I guess their budget for advertising outside their own service is minimal and relies on word of mouth for the most part.

Further to my post on the 19th, it would appear that the letter from a fan complaining that there had been no mention of a repeat showing on TPTV in the Radio Times has given them a guilty conscience !! In the issue for 30th Nov - 6th Dec full details of the re-run are given in their "choices" section on page 54 together with a brief synopsis and kind comments about the writing, and that "the series stands up remarkably well" and our dear Geoffrey, "whose squawking incomprehension never ceases to amuse." Great to see it back on telly. But if you think the prints used on the Talking Pictures repeats are poor, you must have missed the LWT repeats in the early 90s. Wobbly, full of jump cuts and bad splices, and even dirtier than the current screenings.
The 1982 itv network repeats from August/September 1982 were far better, although break bumpers all removed with physical film splices. I have these on off air vhs and definitely better than the current broadcasts.

Talking Pictures on their website claim they copy a lot of their material direct from film reels. I am wondering if they acquired 16mm prints of Catweazle and did a straight telecine transfer, which would explain the scratchy old film, obviously taken from a negative original which you can tell as dust and scratches tend to be mainly white and not black. Note no standard end of reel cue marks which would have been on broadcast positive prints.

One thing I would have liked is if they had held off showing them for a few months! They could then have run series 1 exactly 50 years from the first run by putting it on Sundays (OK episodes 1 and 2 would have been a day out with the leap year but the rest would have been exact!).

Well it is all over. The Thirteenth sign played out beautifully, and what a superb episode. Even with the scratchy old prints, a very enjoyable experience indeed. Hope they repeat them

I found this forum from the repeats on Talking Pictures TV, my favourite satellite channel. I was only 1 when this series was first aired but I vaguely remember it from the pages of Look-In.
I thought the last episode rather bittersweet but overall enjoyed all 26 episodes. Great to see actors such as Neil McCarthy, Tony Selby, John Junkin, Peter Butterworth, Hattie Jacques (I could go on) featured too. I don't think anyone other than Geoffrey Bayldon could have portrayed Catweazle, he brought a certain warmth and naivety to the character.
I prefer series one to series two, principally as Carrot seemed kinder towards Catweazle but series two is very watchable too.
Glad that TPTV saw fit to repeat this endearing series.

Welcome to the forum, Charley. You're right - the guest cast on Catweazle were splendid and Geoffrey is perfect as Catweazle. IMO Robin Davies is every bit his match in the acting stakes. What a team they were... If you're interested in delving further into Catweazle, don't forget that there's a book that was released at the tail end of last year, available via Hidden Tiger: www.hiddentigerbooks.co.uk/

Those figures are quite hearty for a minority channel and the really impressive thing is that they hold the audience level throughout pretty much.
