Dear Catweazle Fan Club
Thank you for accepting me into your Catweazle Fan Club forum. I came across your 'Tis Magic' book and bought the Kindle edition from Amazon. It was wonderful to read, to spend a few days in the company of all those memories about the lovely tv production that is Catweazle. I am at such an age that I watched Catweazle when it was first broadcast back in 1970 (15 Feb-10 May) and, of course, the second series the following year (10 Jan-4 Apr). I was then at the age of 13-14. And, no doubt, I watched the various repeats during the early 1970s. Catweazle has always occupied a warm and homely place in my heart and in my memories. I came back to it when the DVDs were released. And then not again until just recently, during a 'low' period in my life, when I came across my DVD of series 2 and decided to put it on... And I was soon in a happy place... As a child I lived in Cuffley and then near Hertford so I knew the locations where the second series was filmed and it took me back to those seemingly happier childhood days in that beautiful countryside. I also have the Puffin paperbacks so I started to read the series 1 book and it is just so good, makes me laugh quite often and I can 'watch' the scenes from the tv episodes in my mind as I read them. For me, Catweazle is one of those children's tv programmes made with love (which you don't seem to get much of these days) and, watching it, I can sense the love that went into it. That, and the wonderful location filming in the beautiful countryside... Anyway, I really wanted to thank you for the 'Tis Magic' book which helped to bring me back to Catweazle and the original two books and of course to (slowly) watch all of the two series again.

Hi Snipkin, First and foremost, welcome to the Forum! I'm delighted that not only have you enjoyed the Tis Magic! book but also that it has helped reKindle (see what I did there? ) your love of Catweazle. That's brilliant!!! You may have noticed from pottering around the forum that I've just reissued the book with bonus content (an illustrated interview with Geoffrey Bayldon). I think your Kindle version should auto-update to the new version (genuinely, tis magic!) but maybe you'd consider puchasing a hardcover or paperback from Amazon to complement it... Order links are at the Hidden Tiger website along with links for other books I've published: www.hiddentiger.culttv.ukGreat to have you along - and a superb first post. Best wishes, Alan

Welcome to the forum, Snipkin. I trust you'll find it informative and contribute in bringing back the wondrous memories of Catweazle.
(On a side note.. Did you know, talking of filming locations, that Cuffley (well, very near at Goffs Oak) was the location where the 'MoD' fence in 'Timeslip' the children's programme in the 70s about time travel, with Spencer Banks and Cheryl Burfield, was filmed?)

Hi all, My name is Gert and I'm from the Netherlands. I was 11 in 1970, when I saw Catweazle on our black and white tv for the first time. And I should note I did my best not to miss an episode.Since 2009 I have the dvd box, subtitled in Dutch, and it is still my favourite series I've seen on tv.It is nostalgia driving me here. About Catweazle, my nostalgia stands for enjoying a very high quality of tv-making, something I miss nowadays. So I am happy to see it whenever I like. Catweazle never made it to the 13th Century. He stayed with us, and he will always be staying with us. Which brings me to my most dramatic scene: Catweazle fading away in the lake, and Carrot walking away...

Welcome to the forum, Gert. I remember Catweazle was very popular in the Netherlands and that Geoffrey Bayldon even did some personal appearances there to publicise the series. Always good to have one of our Dutch brothers in magic join the fray! Best wishes, Alan

Good morning brothers and sisters in Magic! Ste, you are not alone as an Antipodean fan! I'm Brett, based in Canberra, Australia. ABC did air Catweazle 'here', I think only trailing the original by a year or two (probably the norm back then!). Being a child of '68, I think I saw Catweazle aged 3 or 4. I believe that Catweazle was the first series that I ever 'watched', that is, followed, and probably the first story that I ever absorbed on my own. It had a deep impact on me and I'm grateful that I was exposed to something so imaginative and high quality so early in my life (managed to eclipse Dr Who). Catweazle was the ultimate historical character for me I think, but utterly fascinating as a realised character I recently shared Series One with my son (who's 12) - his interest and response was very rewwarding. As I age, I realise that so many of us have some experience of being Geoffrey's Catweazle in one way or another. I want to thank Carol for welcoming me and I relish the chance to talk to others with same fascination and love of the series and its actors and crew. One I next get to the UK, I plan to make a 'pilgrimage' to East Clarendon, amongst other locations. In genuine fellowship.....

Welcome to the forum, Brett. I apologise if you were waiting a long time to have your registration approved - I'm one of the two admins who deal with approvals and I've been locked out of the site for two months (now resolved, obviously). I hope you enjoy it here. Don't be shy. Fascinating to hear that you watched Catweazle as a child in Australia. Was it shown by ABC? Oh, and in case you do make that pilgrimage, it's East Clandon. Don't want you looking for East Clarendon which isn't on the map.

Hi Alan and thanks for the welcome! I'm sure I won't forget the name of Home Farm's village/town base once I've visited - thanks for helping me not to inadvertently mislead others! No apology needed re the admission time - I'd only waited a few days! Re Catweazle's showing in Australia, yes, definitely via the ABC (add free therefore). So much ABC content was, at the time, British produced. I could only remember flashes of the actual content (until I rewatched it - some moments were powerful jolts of recognition through the decades), but the feeling completely stayed with me: the sad, the silly, the bizarre, the astonishing, the utterly beautiful eccentricity and companionship of it. These feeling that I had about the program were completely revisited when I saw it again as an adult, about six years ago, but deepened by a new perception of the genius (and originality) of the portrayal and the subtlety and sensitivity of the program. It's a study in how to create a new conception of a character, but so totally 'inhabited' by Geoffrey as to be breath taking. Anyway, I have no shortage of strong appreciations of it and an interest too in the details of production. I would love to see the scripts if they were published (?) It's a program for the ages, as we all know and its with excitement that I join and hope to form some great friendships with members of the club, sharing its spirit and marvel. With deep thanks, Brett
