Hi Weazlers, I have at last put something on the news page. I am pretty sure most people do not check it out, because news items are few and far between at the moment, but this is worthy of it. So do check it out next time you are here on the website.
That's fabulous news - a tape of that vintage should be OK if it's been looked after. When I had a reel-to-reel deck about 10 years ago (sadly it died and I couldn't afford to replace it), I was able to play back Bob Monkhouse's tapes which I transferred for the Kaleidoscope group, and some of those dated by to the mid-50s. So something from 69-70 should be recoverable.
Sadly not by me, though, as I have the talents but no longer the tape deck.
Hi Chas, Not sure why you are asking me to look at the news page seeing as it was me that put it on there! .
Yes Alan it was a lovely surprise to be asked if we wanted it and such a nice lady too. It just shows you how important this website is because that's how she got in contact via email from it, otherwise it might have ended up in a bin somewhere. The members that visit the website will be the ones to get updates and news. So please do NOT repeat this news on the facebook page, this is for the members of the club not the world and his wife. I should really have put it in the members only area, but wanted to get someone on the page at last. The results of the tape will be put on the members only section. The wondrous David has a reel to reel and will give it a play at a later date. Which of course we will report back on when we do.

Hi Carol......that's great news about the reel to reel tape and the footage from Gary. Have you any idea what's on the tape ?....any annotation on the box...if there is one of course ? Just wanted to say that I have a working reel to reel machine from the early 60's which I purchased a couple of years ago to play all the tapes my Dad made, which includes one reel featuring my mum and dad together with a selection of Grand parents, Aunts and Uncles all talking to a gurgling and screaming 1 month old me !!! My tapes are all 55-60 years old and as Alan said if they've been stored in the dry should have come to no harm....it's when damp comes into play and then the dreaded white mould gets a grip that you have problems. Thought I'd let you know just in case the wondrous Dave has any problems with his machine, although unlike my non-technical self, he would probably be able to mend it and has, no doubt, the "tech" to transfer the reel to reel directly to a digital recording source, which is what is needed....and which it won't surprise you in the least to know that I don't have !! I'd better release the carrier pigeon and get this message off to you !! Love and hugs to Weazlers everywhere Dxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hello Doug, Good to hear from you. Thanks for the machine offer, will certainly let you know if plan A fails . I can't say what is on it and it is in a very thin card/ paper box of sorts. It has Catweazle, LWI, Q Lawrence and Mix: K. Beal on it. Roll 35 and a few numbers like 25 frames per sec. well I assume that's what FPS means. It's on a BASF tape reel. Looks in good nick. Just hope what's on the tape is what's on the cover!! Would be extremely disappointing to digitalise it only to hear the mournful background music of Coronation Street or something!! .
At a guess, it sounds from your description like live sound to accompany a selection of takes for a Series 1 episode. It quite likely features multiple goes at a single scene or small number of scenes.
Absolutely! It gives you hope there may be more out there somewhere. Whilst I am here can I just apologise to Chas as I misread his post earlier on. I thought he was asking ME to look at the news page, when in fact he had put that he had LOOKED at the news page, making my comment irrelevant in reply! So I need to take more care in reading posts OR need stronger glasses!

Hi Carol....many thanks for all the info on the tape.......I think the "fps" you saw written on it's cover might be "ips" = inches per second, which is the way tape speed is expressed for audio recordings. I'm not an expert on this subject but checked for similar annotation on my tapes. Can't wait to find out what's on it now !! Dxxxxxxxx
Actually, Doug, I think Carol's right, as if the number is indeed 25, that's not a reel-to-reel tape recording speed. Tapes ran at 1 and 7/8ths ips, 3 and 3/4ips, 7 and 1/2 ips and 15 ips (and always doubled in speed AIUI). So it likely is a reference to the 25 fps film speed of the footage being shot, which again would be correct for UK TV.
