Hi all,
I have just been made aware of this:
Catweazle Coming to Talking Pictures TV.
23rd September 2019 Jamie Dyer 0 Comments
British channel Talking Pictures TV have announced they will broadcast the British 1970s series Catweazle.
Originally broadcast on ITV for 2 series between 1970 and 1971, it ran for 26 episodes. Created by Richard Carpenter for London Weekend Television, the series starred Geoffrey Bayldon as an eccentric 11th-century wizard who finds himself in the present day. The series also feaured Robin Davies, Gary Warren, Neil McCarthy, Charles ‘Bud’ Tingwell, Moray Watson and Peter Butterworth alongside guest actors including: Patricia Hayes, Hattie Jacques, John Junkin, Peter Sallis and Paul Eddington.
Catweazle begins on Talking Pictures TV on Saturday 2nd of November at 3:30pm & continues Saturdays & Sundays at the same time.
It's a shame it's not on a more recognised channel - still, if you have the channel please watch it as if they get big viewing figures, it might lead to something - you never know!

That's excellent news... As for the channel, it's the highest rating independent TV channel in Britain. I think that counts as "recognised". It's very popular.

Wouldn't it be great if the TPTV repeats made use of the new HD masters - albeit in SD. It's not a great advert for the show if they use the same old tired tatty washed out prints we've been stuck with for 50 years.

Indeed, but then again the technical quality of Talking Pictures TV's channel (certainly on Freesat, which is how I access it) is hardly 'reference'! Judging by the poor quality of film prints shown on the channel, which seem to do little to dissuade viewers from tuning in, tatty prints won't really look that much out of place.

Yes absolutely, I was going to make the same comment. TPTV has become an extremely popular channel in the UK, I would say its recognition is one of the highest.

Judging by the poor quality of film prints shown on the channel, which seem to do little to dissuade viewers from tuning in, tatty prints won't really look that much out of place. The satellite version of TPTV is not as bad as it was on day one but its still dreadful. The Freeview version of TPTV is not as good as it was on Day One (when they were using an HD multiplex) but its still better than the satellite version. If the difference between the original Catweazle prints and the remastered ones is as pronounced as it is with The Professionals then it will look miles better on any platform. TPTV own outright the Renown library which is practically all the second features made by the lower end British studios. The better films and the bigger studios all ended up with Thorn EMI which today means Studio Canal. TPTV tatty prints appear to be most of their own stuff but just as UK Gold and Granada + did when they got bigger ratings and bigger budgets they left behind the material the station was built on and spent money buying superior content so much of primetime on TPTV these days seems to be from their deals with Studio Canal and ITV so they can show films people have actually heard of while the Renown movies, most which people have never heard of seem to be at the fringes of the schedule these days

Managed to catch some of The Eye of Time while my wife and I were visiting a friend who has Talking Pictures TV on "all the time". Must admit I was quite taken aback at just how poor the print was, even compared to the DVD version of this episode. Lots of film dirt and damage and poor sound. Since we know that ITV has made High Definition transfers of the Catweazle negatives, why is it these knackered old prints are being shown when there appears to be better sources available?
Don't get me wrong, it's lovely that the series is being shown at all, but there's a part of me that's disappointed about these TPTV repeats.

Yes, the DVD of Catweazle is much better quality than what's being aired..
.. But, as you say, It IS wonderful that they are showing the series and introducing Catweazle to a new audience of children and adults alike..

Not that children are necessarily TPTV's main demographic. Old farts like me, more accurately!

Me too 😂
Although I'm sure old farts would be recommending and introducing their children or grandchildren to watch it.

Old Fart: "Hey kid, you really need to watch Catweazle on TPTV. It's brilliant and you'll love it!" Kid: "Shut up, you old fart. I'm playing Candy Crush!"

Yes, that's about right.
Plan B. Leave the DVD laying around with a post-it note stuck to it saying 'Not to be watched'
